About Information Systems
The Information Systems Division of the Finance Department is responsible for the overall technology management for all City departments.
Information Systems provides technical support for over 200 PC systems and management of 16 network servers providing data as unique as video streams of public meetings, to facilities reservations, to Library catalogs. Server management includes backups (power, data, and physical spares), long term capacity planning, periodical upgrades, disaster recovery, and security hardening.
Equally as important to the day to day work of IT is the need for perspective. Technology is not a panacea. History is Information Systems most valuable tool. Computers are much like automobiles in the early 1900s. At that time, automobiles seemed magical, and were envisioned capable of tasks beyond driving. For example, the automobile was once deemed suitable for use on a floating "power ferry" to accomplish family water navigation. This idea proved impractical because the slightest error would send the car off the floating platform into the water. In other words, not all computer "solutions" are workable.
The Appropriate Use of Technology
Our goal is the appropriate application of technology. A successful example is pictured below:
Live streaming public meetings and video archives available soon after each meeting clearly benefit the Glendora community and their increasingly busy schedules. Live meetings can be accessed via the Live and Archived Meeting page. (Installing Microsoft Silverlight is required for Video and Audio.)
The system requirements for Microsoft Silverlight and associated technologies are listed below.
- Operating System: Windows Vista; Windows XP Service Pack 2

Many procedures of Information Systems are, for security reasons, kept confidential. Software changes frequently - documentation usually is impractical. Among the duties of the newly established IT Committee will be security and procedures objective review and refinement.
- Staff – Information Systems' two full time staff members have each served Glendora for over ten years.
Computer System Inventory – updated daily
Wide Area Network – a project envisioned by Information Systems to permanently decrease the communications operating costs of moving data to ten offsite facilities.
30mb Fiber Line – This single connection is shared by ten facilities (through the wide area network) enabling all the knowledge (and, more recently, risk) that is the internet, to speed the implementation of technology projects.
Budget – Information Systems Division is responsible for selecting equipment, proposing contracts, and maintaining spare part reserves within the $180,000 IS Division annual budget
Oral History - Many procedures of Information Systems are confidential for security reasons; software changes frequently, making full documentation impractical.
Information Systems represents Glendora as a voting chair member of Municipal Information Systems Association of California. This association holds confidential talks and periodical meetings to discuss the state of security in technology used by public agencies.
