Trash should be placed in standard 32- to 35-gallon trash cans. Residents must provide their own cans, which are available at local hardware and home improvement stores. Residents are limited to a maximum of 10 trash cans per household and a maximum weight of 50 pounds per can.
Trash cans must be placed in the designated pickup area (alley, sidewalk, or parkway depending on your location) by 6 a.m. on trash pickup day. Trash pickup days differ by neighborhood; please contact Athens to determine your pickup day. Trash containers may not be put out before 8 p.m. the day prior to pickup and must be removed by 8 a.m. the day after pickup.
When a holiday falls on a weekday, all trash pickup for the rest of the week is delayed one day. Holidays include New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
Athens will pick up bulky items if they are notified in advance. For bulky items including water heaters, furnaces, mattresses, furniture, appliances, and bundles of wood or yard waste, contact Athens one day before your regular pickup day to schedule the pickup or use their online form. For safety reasons, please secure all appliance doors before setting them out for pickup.
Temporary dumpster and rolloff services are available for cleanup, construction, or landscape projects. To rent a 3-cubic-yard dumpster or 30-cubic-yard rolloff bin, contact Athens or use their online form.
Recyclable items do not need to be sorted or separated from trash. All of the trash that Athens collects is taken to the Athens Material Recovery Facility where it is sorted. Recyclable items including aluminum, glass, plastic, and paper are separated from the trash for recycling. This process helps the City of Glendora achieve its goal of diverting at least 50% of household waste from the landfill.
If you wish to recycle your own aluminum, glass, or plastic containers, you can turn them in at a recycling center or use a self-vending machine to redeem the California Redemption Value (CRV). There are three recycling center and self-service machine locations in Glendora (click for maps):
- rePlanet - Albertsons parking lot, 133 W. Route 66
- rePlanet - Ralphs parking lot, 655 S. Grand Avenue
- NexCycle - Vons parking lot, 435 W. Foothill Boulevard
The Puente Hills Material Recovery Facility Recycle Center also accepts and pays for aluminum, glass, plastic, newspaper, and cardboard.
Green/yard waste is taken by Athens to a facility where it is converted into mulch. All yard waste including grass clippings, leaves, and small branches must be separated from trash and placed in separate 32- to 35-gallon cans marked with a "Yard Waste" sticker. These stickers are available at Glendora City Hall at the cashier window in the main lobby and at the water bill payment counter. Green waste must be placed directly into the cans and not put into a plastic or paper bag.
The following items are not suitable for mulching and must be placed in the trash cans rather than the yard waste cans:
- palm fronds, cactus, yucca, and other succulent plants
- tree branches with a diameter larger than 10 inches
- tree trunks and stumps
- pet waste
- food waste
Yard Waste cans that include these items or other trash items will not be picked up.
Composting is a great way to dispose of yard waste and create free compost for use in your yard and garden. Compost bins are available for purchase from the City of Glendora Planning Department for the discounted price of $25 for Glendora residents.
The Planning Department also sells worm bins to Glendora residents at the discounted price of $45 without worms or $55 with a coupon to have worms shipped to your home.
