Registration, at which your child will pick out a free book and you will receive reporting guidelines, will begin the week of June 15, but you can also sign up any time through the end of the program. All reporting will take place in the children's room at the library. An incentive is given out each week to children if they have been read to regularly.
The Summer Reading Club goal is to encourage parents with young children to make reading and interacting with books a part of their daily lives. In Mother Goose Storytime Thursday mornings, we model reading behaviors for parents and children that emphasize the importance of reading to the very young. In this program, we will utilize the in information and resources for the Every Child Ready to Read program sponsored by the Public Library Association, as well as materials that form the foundation of the Early Learning with Families program started by the California State Library.
There are six pre-reading skills that children must learn in order to read. Research shows that children get ready to read years before the start of school. You can help your baby and toddler learn these important skills now, so they can become good readers:
Print Motivation - is a child's interest in and enjoyment of books.
- Let your child use books as toys.
- Let your child see you reading. Read parts of your materials out loud for your child.
Phonological Awareness - is the ability to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words.
- Read Nursery Rhymes and other books that rhyme.
- Make different sounds; like animal sounds or machine sounds.
Vocabulary - is knowing the names of things.
- Explain words your child does not know; do not skip over them.
- Repeat words over and over.
Narrative Skills - is the ability to describe things and events and to tell stories.
- Encourage your child to talk to you.
- Use books and pictures to help your child tell a story.
Letter Knowledge - is knowing that letters are different from each other and that they have different names and sounds.
- Point out and talk about shapes with your child.
- Read alphabet books to your child.
Print Awareness - is noticing print is everywhere, knowing how to handle a book and how to follow the words on a page.
- Point out words and pictures on everyday objects like cereal boxes.
- Let your child turn the pages as you read together.
